MISSION STATEMENT
A fundraising campaign to promote Hellenism and
benefit the capital campaign for the completion of
a new Byzantine Greek Orthodox Church,
 St. Catherines's Braintree

Dear Friends of Hellenism,

What happens when the world-famous Boston Pops Orchestra shares its stage with the most highly acclaimed female vocalist in Greece? Quite simply, history is made, and a new chapter of Hellenic pride in the United States begins!

We are inviting you to be part of history, at the grandest Hellenic musical event ever to be held in the United States. Please join us and 2300 Greeks and Greek-Americans from across the world for Pops Goes Hellenic, a celebration of our culture and heritage at Boston's Symphony Hall on June 7, 2008. This will be the first time in North America that a world-class symphonic orchestra will perform an entirely Hellenic program.

Boston Pops Conductor Keith Lockhart, America's most-loved maestro, and Greek singing sensation Haris Alexiou will highlight the event as the Boston Pops Orchestra performs music from notable Greek composers throughout the ages and Alexiou, Greece's number one vocalist, presents her finest repertoire.

The evening will open with a video featuring Hellenes from around the world. Pre- and post-concert receptions offer opportunities to gather with internationally prominent celebrities and professionals that have influenced and promoted our Greek heritage. Sample the foods of noted cookbook author and expert on Greek cuisine, Diane Kochilas along with distinguished leaders including: Senator Edward Kennedy, Caroline Kennedy; Congresswoman Nikki Tsongas, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick; Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and others.

The event is produced by Elia, a newly-formed group of friends from the United States and Greece who are dedicated to preserving our culture. Our goal is to build a stronger Greek-American community committed to benefiting a variety of Hellenic causes. In addition to giving our children a stronger sense of pride in their rich heritage, our hope is to foster a culture of philanthropy that ensures that those institutions that supported our forbearers are sustained for future generations.

The proceeds from this grand event will support the capital campaign to raise funds for the new St. Catherine's Greek Orthodox Church, a classic Byzantine-style church serving the Greek community on Boston's South Shore.

We sincerely hope that you and your family will join us in Boston on June 7, uniting in our goal of creating both a lifelong memory and a new awareness of our precious Hellenic heritage.

So...what happens when the world-famous Boston Pops shares the stage with the best female vocalist in Greece? Be there to find out!

St. Catherine's Church
The plans for the development of the Braintree site began in earnest in 2000 when the Parish assembled a Building Committee. In 2001 the Parish engaged the services of a prominent architectural firm. Within a period of three years the plans for the new site were developed, financial arrangements with local banks were made, and a successful building campaign was conducted. In early autumn of 2004 the Parish made the transition from Quincy to Braintree. With great joy a new chapter was opened in the life of the Parish. The new complex includes a large community center, a suite of administrative offices, several classrooms, a large reception area and ample parking facilities. The foundations for the new Church edifice have already been laid in the eastern corner of the Braintree site, next to the administration building.

Symphony Hall
Symphony Hall in Boston, Massachusetts, is widely regarded as one of the two or three finest concert halls in the world. The walls of the stage slope inward to help focus the sound, the side balconies are shallow so as not to trap any of the sound, and the recesses of the coffered ceiling, along with the statue-filled niches along the three sides, help to distribute the sound throughout the hall. The 16 replicas of Greek and Roman statues are related in some way to music, art, or literature. They were placed in the niches as part of an appreciation of the frequently quoted words, "Boston, the Athens of America," written by Bostonian William Tudor in the early 19th century. The Symphony Hall organ, an Aeolian Skinner designed by G. Donald Harrison and installed in 1949, is considered one of the finest concert hall organs in the world.
